Commission: binding and hand printing woodcuts

From the publishers:

Angels, a signed and numbered special edition of 75 copies, of which only 60 are for sale, is the result of a collaboration between illustrator Pauline Jacobsen, author Adrian Roberts, and designer Rosemary Roberts, together with two master Fine Press printers. This is a valuable book about the mysteries of God and His use of angels as messengers in biblical times.

Adrian Roberts is a teacher with degrees in theology and classics, disciplines he uses to great effect in his scholarly, yet completely accessible text.

Pauline Jacobsen has produced stunning woodcuts. Her skill at using the grain of the wood has resulted in pictures which speak of the mystery of the book’s subject. The 22 full page woodcuts are in three colours, and the chapters are headed by one-colour blocks.

The book has hand-sewn silk headbands and is quarter leather bound in Nigerian goatskin with original paste-paper sides by David Esslemont, who also hand-printed all the illustrations from the original blocks. The text is letterpress printed by Simon King with an attention to detail that is the hallmark of his work.

"Generous proportions and noble presentation… this book is a treasure" - David Burnett in the Fine Press Book Association’s journal, Parenthesis, April 2000

"The Press prints and publishes limited editions of fine books. We are members of the Fine Press Book Association. We are based in England, in the Yorkshire village of Lastingham, a centre for Christian worship and pilgrimage since AD 654. We publish poetry and short works of prose, hand-printed by letterpress, on fine paper and bound in full cloth covered boards. Each copy is numbered and signed. All the original illustrations are printed from blocks cut in wood or lino, or from drawings made into metal line blocks."
